“…it’s an enemy to trial and tribulation…”

Subhaanallaah, just as fast as Ramadhaan came, it is leaving us. Yaa akhawaat, we pray that you are taking advantage of this blessed month, this ni’mah from Allaah. And we pray that you are utilizing your weapons (supplications and prayers) for Allaah commanded us to make du’aa (40:60) and has commanded us to “seek help through patient perseverance and prayer.” (2:153)

Imaam Ibn Qayyim al Jawziyyah (rahimahullaah) said: In the power of their force and sharpness, supplications and prayers are likened to a weapon. Whenever a weapon has been perfected, there is no danger and the person is aided by a strong helper. The barrier is lifted and the injury is inflicted upon the enemy. Therefore if the du’aa isn’t correct, the servant’s pleas to Allaah lacks sincerity and correctness of the tongue, or if there is a barrier preventing it from being answered, the effect of the du’aa isn’t obtained. The supplication to Allaah is from among the most beneficial remedies. It’s an enemy to trial and tribulation that defends against and treats them.

Du’aa can prevent hardship from descending upon the individual, lift it, or lighten it if it does fall down upon him. For sure du’aa is the weapon of the believer. Just as Al Haakim has narrated in his collection on the authority of ‘Alee bin Abee Taalib who said the Messenger of Allaah said: Du’aa is a weapon, a pillar of the religion and a light within the heavenly skies.

{Shaykh al Albaani said it was Hasan in Saheeh al Jaami’ as Sagheer}

In the face of hardship and calamity, the du’aa assumes three positions:

  1. The du’aa is stronger than the calamity or hardship therefore it defends against them.
  2. The du’aa is weaker than the calamity or hardship. They are actually stronger and consequently the servant is stricken by the calamity or hardship. However, at times the trial is lightened in spite of the fact that the person is weak.
  3. Both the trial and the du’aa are evenly matched. They battle against one another and as a result, the person is protected.
