How to Find Happiness by Shaykh al Albaani

Al-Albaani Asked About How to Find Happiness

by The Albaani Blog

Questioner: People strive to attain happiness, their ways in achieving it being diverse, if our Shaikh would clarify for the people some milestones in their path to attain it?

Al-Albaani: I don’t think there is any differing in this except among the philosophers.

Amongst the Muslims who believe in Allaah and His Messenger and who believe that there is no path to happiness in this life or the next except by clinging to Islaam there is no multiplicity of answers–[the only answer] is to cling to Islaam.

And vice versa, whoever wants misery should turn away from Islaam, and this is very clear from many verses, like His Saying, the Most High, in the well-known aayah“And whoever turns away from My remembrance–indeed, he will have a depressed [i.e., difficult] life, and We will gather [i.e., raise] him on the Day of Resurrection blind. He will say, ‘My Lord! Why have you raised me blind while I was [once] seeing?’ He will say, ‘Thus did Our signs come to you, and you forgot [i.e., disregarded] them–and thus will you, this Day, be forgotten.’” [Taa Haa 20:124-126]

But the thing we must pay heed to, something which is a very big reality and painful from another angle due to many of the Muslims lacking it, many of them [lacking it] in terms of knowledge and some of them practically, is that Islaam with the Book of Allaah and the Sunnah of Allaah’s Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم upon the understanding of the Salaf as-Saalih is the cure for all diseases and psychological illnesses which have afflicted a people who have not tasted happiness.

Islaam derived from the Book and the Sunnah and the methodology of the Salaf as-Saalih is the cure.

But the thing I want to mention now is that many alien matters have entered this cure, which, if we don’t say have corrupted it completely then at the very least have prevented it from being an absolute one, [and I’m referring here to] those things which have come into Islaam which are not a part of it, whether they be in creed, worship, behaviour or manners, and due to these things which have afflicted it, this Islaam is turned inside out … its effect is not manifested in the community that practices it.

So the fault is not with Islaam but rather those things that have been added to it.

That is why we always and forever insist on saying that if we want this happiness, there is no way to it, as we already mentioned, except through Islaam–but not, if the expression be correct, Islaam with an ‘elastic’ understanding but with the special understanding based upon the Book, the Sunnah and the methodology of the Salaf as-Saalih.

It is then that it, and nothing else, will be the spring of happiness.

Whatever the case, I hold that questions like this are studied in universities which do not specialize, in fact, do not give importance to studying Islaam, but are concerned with studying general culture whether that be Islaam, or philosophy, or secularism or things like it [i.e., they don’t know that happiness is found in following the true Islaam so they spend time trying to find other ways to achieve it].

Amongst the Muslims, the understanding is that there is no happiness except by clinging to Islaam–I just wanted to add [through this answer the point about] clinging to Islaam with its correct understanding …

Interjector: O Shaikh! I had taken a booklet from you which I photocopied, called, ‘Useful Ways of Leading a Happy Life,’ by Shaikh ’Abdur-Rahmaan ibn Naasir as-Sa’di [who was Shaikh Uthaimeen’s teacher, may Allaah have mercy on them both], even though it is only a few pages long, it’s a very great book, O Shaikh.

Al-Albaani: Maa shaa Allaah.

Interjector: If a person was depressed, sad, or ill at ease … and read it, subhaanallaah! Namely, if the expression is allowed, it’s as though it is magic.

Al-Albaani: Maa shaa Allaah.

Interjector: Yes, by Allaah, ‘Useful Ways of Leading a Happy Life,’ truly amazing, O Shaikh. [Click here for the book]

Al-Albaani: You should read it.

Interjector: It is great, subhaanallaah! By Shaikh ’Abdur-Rahmaan ibn Naasir as-Sa’di. [Click here for his website]

Among the means of eliminating worry, grief, and anxiety is goodness to the creation by words, deeds and all types of good acts. All of these are good and excellent in the sight of Allaah and by them Allaah removes worries and anxieties from both the good and the bad (persons), each in accordance with his level of being good to the creation. Increase of Provision through Forgiveness

(A) Hasan al Basri -Rahimullaah- mentioned:

‘That a man complained to him concerning drought so it was said seek forgiveness from Allaah, another complained about another matter so it was said seek forgiveness from Allaah, another complained about lack of rain for his land so it was said seek forgiveness from Allaah another complained of no offspring so it was said seek forgiveness from Allaah, then he (Hasan al Basri) recited:

<Forgiver.
He will send [rain from] the sky upon you in [continuing] showers
And give you increase in wealth and children and provide for you gardens and provide for you rivers.>>

Nuh: 10-12

[Taken from: ‘Fath al-Bari’ Chapter: the Best Method of Seeking forgiveness]

B) al-Hafidh Emaad ad-Deen Isma’eel Ibn Katheer (d. 774 A.H.) -Rahimullaah- said in his Tafseer about the previous Ayaat:

‘If you repented to Allaah and sought forgiveness from Him and showed obedience to Him your Rizq (provision) would increase and rain would fall from the blessings of the skies, and the blessings of the earth would spring forth, crops would grow for you. You will be given abundant livestock. You will be aided with wealth and offspring; meaning that offspring and wealth would be given to you. And you will be given gardens that have numerous types of fruits and throughout there will be rivers that flow in these gardens. This is the way of giving Dawa’ by encouragement.’

[Taken from: ‘Tafseer al-Qur’aan al-Atheem’ 4/p.536]

C) It is narrated from Abi Saeed Al-Khudri that the Messenger of Allaah -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam- said:

‘Whoever performs Wudu and then says:

‘ Subhanaka Allahuma wabihamdika la ilaha ila anta astaghfiruka wa atooboo ilaika’

(‘Far are You O Allaah from imperfection, and You have all praise, there is none worthy of worship in truth except You, I seek forgiveness from You and I repent to You), then this reward is written in a parchment and it is stamped with a seal and no falsehood can break it until the day of Judgment.’

This Name

Regarding the name “Allaah” – Ibn Qayyim al Jawziyyah {rahimahullaah} stated: This Name is never mentioned over any small amount or quantity of anything except that it increases thereby. If mentioned in times of fear, it removes the object of fear and in times of anguish or distress, it alleviates it.

English: A green version of http://commons.wik...

Should a weak person cling to these words, he will be strengthened, and the humiliated one will be given dignity. A poor person will be enriched thereby, and the one who feels lonely and desolate will be entertained. The wronged will be aided and supported, while the person who is compelled will be sustained. The homeless person will be sheltered.

It is the Great Name with which anguish is removed, blessings are sought, supplications are accepted, sins are forgiven, evil deeds are repelled and good deeds are performed. It is the Name on which the heavens and earth were raised, Divine Books were revealed, the Messengers were sent, laws were legislated, prescribed penalties were established, Jihaad was founded, the people were divided into “happy” and “unhappy,” the inevitable takes place, and the Event befalls.

It is the Name with which the balance is set, the Straight Path is established, Paradise and Hell were made to exist, and Allaah the Al-Mighty is served. It is the Name about which one is asked in the grave, (asked about) on the Day of Resurrection, and during the Reckoning. It is the Name about which alienation is aroused between the believers and the polytheists. It is the Name for the sake of which one should befriend some, and show enmity to others. The happiness and distress of one depend on knowing that Name and observing its due rights. This Name is the secret of creation and revealing matters.  It is linked to the beginning and the end of everything. Allaah ‘Azza wa Jall said;

“Our Lord! You have not created (all) this without purpose. Glory be to You! Exalted are You above all that they associate as partners with You. Give us salvation from the torment of the fire.”

Aali ‘Imraan:191

السلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته

Umm ‘Abdillaah ‘Aaishah Al Waadi’iyyah – hafithahallaah – (daughter of Shaykh Muqbil bin Haadee – rahmatullaahi ‘alaihi) said after the opening du’aa;

“O sisters, Upon us is to have mercy upon ourselves. Save yourselves from the
Fire. There is no way out for anyone from the Fitnah that we are in now,
except by sticking to what the Prophet (sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) came
with.”

Hadeeth of Abu Najeeh Al ‘Irbaad bin Sariyyah’ (radhiyallaahu ‘anhu): The
Prophet (sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) admonished us with an intense
sermon which caused our hearts to tremble, and the eyes to shed tears. So,
we said; Yaa Rasoolallaah (sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) this is as if it
were your last sermon. – Al Hadeeth. {Aboo Daawood and others declared it Saheeh}

“There is no way out for anyone except by sticking to the Sunnah which the
Prophet (sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) came with. This holding requires
submission, a complete submission. As believers, it is a must on us. We
have to say regarding any command from Allaah Ta ‘aalaa, and HIS Messenger
(sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam), “Sami’naa wa ata’naa,” (We hear and we
obey), and not like the Yahood (Jews) who said, “We hear and we disobey.”
It is not befitting for the believing man nor the believing woman, when the
Prophet (sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) comes with a decision, that they
have a choice after him.”

“O sisters, the truth is very heavy. Falsehood is light (easy to accept).
It is very heavy, except for those whom Allaah made it easy and
guided them for that.”

Al Hadeeth: Jannah is surrounded by undesirable things. The Fire is
surrounded by desires.

“O sisters, it is upon us that we get used to submitting to Allaah.” Umm
‘Abdillaah (hafidhahallaah) mentioned a poem:

“Your nafs are always wanting if you make it a habit. If you control and
limit yourself, that is what your nafs will get used to.”

“Do not say ‘why’ to the command of Allaah.” Umm ‘Abdillaah
(hafidhahallaah), gave the example of Salaat by saying; “Pray and get used
to it. We are commanded to Fast, so you must Fast, make Hajj and ‘Umrah.
HE, Ta ‘Aalaa, has made certain things compulsory towards the husband and
we do not say why.”

“O sisters, it is up to us to preserve our tongues, especially because the
Prophet (sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) told us the reason why women are
the majority in the Hell Fire. Be more careful than men. Women curse a
lot and have many complaints. It is not a good habit to complain to this
sister, that sister, to this one, and that one. Guard your tongue.”

Gheebah: It is to say something behind the back of your brother, that which
he would not like to have been said, even if it is true, and if it is not
true, then you have slandered him.

“When the believing woman leaves her home, she wears Hijaab, and she leaves
the home properly.”

Allaah Ta ‘Aalaa said: (translated to mean): And Stay in your houses, and do not display yourselves like that of the times of ignorance, and perform As-Salaat and give Zakaat and obey Allaah and His Messenger. Allaah wishes only to remove Ar rijs (evil deeds and sins, etc.) from you, O members of the family (of the Prophet), and to purify you with a thorough purification. 33/33

“Allaah has made it waajib upon us to preserve our ears, and to avoid
listening to songs, Gheebah, and Nameemah. Allaah created us for
‘Eebaadah. The Dunyaa is temporary and attractive. The Prophet
(sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) warned against submitting to the Dunyaa.”

Hamm: Concern, all that you think about and focus on, etc.

“The one whose hamm is the Dunyaa, Allaah will scatter from him, it could be
from his family, his money, etc. All that he will see is poverty. The
person will not attain anything more than what is written for him. Whoever
focuses on the Aakhirah, all your needs will be brought near, and made easy
for you. The believing heart is rich, even if the believer is poor. The
World will come to you, it is forced to you.”

Hadeeth Qudsi: The Prophet (sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) said that Allaah
Subhaanahu Wa Ta’Aalaa said, “O children of Aadam (‘alaihis salaam), if you
rush into worship, I will fill your hearts with Rizq (provision). Do not
neglect, (be alert). If you neglect, I will fill your hands with poverty
and things that will make you busy.”

“Allaah condemned the people who are filled with the Dunyaa. Be careful,
and aware of submitting to the Dunyaa. Sit with As Saalihaat (the pious
women), it has a lot of affects. Go back to submitting to Allaah so that
you will be from Ahlul Jannah. Stick to The Book (The Qur’aan). Seek ‘ilm
of the Islaamic Law. Try to understand the Book of Allaah, it is the best
way to come close to HIM. Be eager and anxious in seeking ‘ilm. Be
careful, do not do a deed until you know whether or not it is Halaal or
Haraam. Do not rush into it until you know.”

Was Salaamun ‘Alaal Mursaleen, Walhamdulillaahi Rabbil ‘Aalameen.
