Your father never took a second wife! – Answered by Shaykh Salih Suhaymee
Question: A man desires to practices polygyny but his mother strongly deters him and she says: ‘your father never practiced polygyny, how can you practice polygyny!’
Shaykh Salih Suhaymee: This is a flimsy argument. If his father did not practice polygyny, will you make impermissible for him that which Allah has made permissible for him? If he finds inside himself the capability, the physical capability, figurative capability (being up to the task), and financial capability, then it is upon him to practice polygyny and to break the collar which has been imposed upon the Muslims due to their blind following the West; and due to their blind following of the disbelievers. Thus it is upon him to break this (collar) and to have resolve. And his mother has no right to prevent him from this if he finds a righteous woman. Yes she has the right to advise him if he desires to marry a woman who is not righteous. But if he finds a righteous woman then it is upon him to practice polygyny, if he has the ability to do so.
Question: His mother is afraid if he takes a second wife, his father will take a second wife.
Shaykh Salih Suhaymee: Yes, if this is the case, then this is more the reason for him to do it. Yes, like we said, this campaign against polygyny and against some of the affairs of Islam; is from the most dangerous affairs which has caused an overcrowding of the girls in the homes. Now the homes have rows in them, the homes contain dozens of girls who have not married. This is due to the war on polygyny. The war is waged by the magazines, new papers, plays, and the indecent movies, by many things.
It is upon the Muslims to hold on to their Deen, and to not pay attention to these spokesmen who wish to prevent them from this good. By Allah, if they would have tried it they would have praised Allah; but they are cowards. Thus the eyes of the cowards do not sleep.
It is upon us to increase this thing but as I have stated it is upon the Muslim to strive to be just in this affair and to endeavor to have justice.
But if you fear that you will not be just, then [marry only] one (Soorah An Nisa 4:3)
If you find in yourself the ability to be just and fair then it is upon you to rush to break this collar which has been placed around our necks due to our following the West. Whoever finds in himself the ability then it is upon him to rush to that; and to do well in preserving the chaste Muslim women preserved in their homes. It is upon us to give life to this Sunnah and to stand firm in the face of those who oppose it.
